Mark Martin Wins the LifeLock 400

"Old man, you snookered us again!" Jeff Gordon congratulated Mark Martin in the winner's circle at Michigan International Speedway after Mark pulled off his third win of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Martin was biding his time, running in the third spot while Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson raced each other for the lead, burning valuable fuel. Mark laid back and turned off anything in his car that would help him conserve fuel in the last few laps of the Lifelock 400. Jimmie Johnson was leading one lap from the finish. Greg Biffle ran out of gas on the last lap, and Martin cruised across the finish line in first place. It was very close however, as Mark had no fuel left when he took the checkered flag.
Martin jumped up five places to number eight in the points standings as the Chevys dominated the race with teammate Jeff Gordon finishing in the second spot. Hendrick Motorsports continues to be the class of the field, but Chevy, in general, is having a strong year.
The battle for The Chase intensifies as only 61 points separate the eighth-place driver from David Reutimann in the 13th slot in the current standings. And don't count out that 14th-place driver. Juan Pablo Montoya is making a solid statement, and is only 43 points out of The Chase.
Tony Stewart came away from Michigan International Speedway with a solid seventh-place finish to remain in first-place in the Race For The Chase. However, if The Chase started today, Kyle Busch, who has four wins, would be in first-place, followed closely by Mark Martin with three wins. Talk about two opposite personalities leading the way! I don't think either of these drivers is done winning in the Race For The Chase, and with 11 races left until the start of the second season, it's anybody's guess who will start out in front.
Next up is the road race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. The road course at Infineon will be a great change of pace. Look for the type of action there that could shake up the standings.
